The Startup Conference Calendar After SXSW Sydney

SXSW Sydney is cancelled for good. Here's what's actually left on the Australian startup calendar — verified dates, costs, and how to run your own event instead of just attending.

Short answer: SXSW Sydney was cancelled in January 2026 after the NSW government pulled funding, three years into a five-year plan — and it isn't coming back. What replaces it isn't one event but a spread of smaller ones: Spark Festival, Sunrise by Blackbird, the Social Enterprise Summit, The Business Show Australia and Ignite Talks. Two of those actively fund or platform founders who want to run their own sessions, which is the more valuable move anyway.

This article is for Australian founders planning their 2027 calendar, with what's left of 2026 included.

Key takeaways

  • SXSW Sydney is cancelled permanently, not postponed

  • Spark Festival (September) is entirely free and entirely community-hosted

  • Sunrise runs a $10,000 grant fund for community side events

  • Three events remain in late 2026: Ignite Talks, the Social Enterprise Summit, The Business Show

  • Speaking beats attending — the calendar below shows where to start

What happened to SXSW Sydney

In January 2026, SXSW Sydney was cancelled along with all future editions after the NSW government withdrew funding. It had run three years of a scheduled five.

The loss isn't just a week in October. It's the gravitational effect — a tentpole event pulls international visitors, investor attention and side programming around it. Without one, Australian founders have to assemble their own calendar from smaller events. That's more work, and arguably better: smaller rooms convert.

Still to come in 2026

Ignite Talks Sydney — Tuesday 27 October

Oxford Art Factory, Darlinghurst. Doors 6pm, talks from 7pm, running to 10:30pm. Fifteen speakers, five minutes each, exactly twenty slides, auto-advancing every fifteen seconds whether you're ready or not. Over-18s only, licensed venue.

Why it matters: This is the single best low-stakes format for a founder who has never spoken publicly. The auto-advance removes the two things that make speaking terrifying — overrunning and losing your place. You either keep up or you don't, and the audience is on your side either way.

Social Enterprise Summit & Festival — 13–14 November

Run by SECNA, the Social Enterprise Council of NSW & ACT, in Sydney. Day one is the Summit; day two is the Festival — workshops, talks and market stalls across more than 100 social enterprises, with free entry.

Why it matters: For purpose-led and impact businesses, this is the densest concentration of aligned operators in the state. The festival day's free entry makes it a genuinely no-risk first visit. For hosting enquiries, the contact is festival@secna.org.au.

The Business Show Australia — 25–26 November

ICC Sydney, 10am–4pm both days. Broader SME and business expo rather than startup-specific.

Why it matters: Different audience to the venture world — established small business owners, service providers, suppliers. If you sell to businesses rather than raise from investors, this room is more commercially useful than a pitch night.

Planning for 2027

Spark Festival — September

Spark 2026 ran 21–27 September, opening at UTS Great Hall and closing at UTS Startups @ Central. Billed as Australia's largest grassroots startup festival, spanning Sydney and regional NSW.

The thing most founders miss: every event is free, and every event is community-hosted. Spark doesn't programme the festival top-down. It opens submissions and the community fills the week with talks, panels, workshops, dinners, socials, pitch nights and roundtables.

Sunrise by Blackbird — autumn

Sunrise 2026 was held on 30 April at Carriageworks, Eveleigh, condensed into a single day and night. General admission dropped 30% to $289, and early-stage founders up to Series A — including bootstrapped and pre-funding — could apply for $99 tickets, allocated by lottery with applications closing in mid-January.

Two things to diarise. First, the cheap founder tickets require applying roughly three months ahead; if you wait for the marketing push you've missed it. Second, Blackbird deliberately left room for community-run side events and backed them with a $10,000 grant fund issuing grants of $200 to $2,000.

That second point is the most actionable thing in this entire article.

How to run your own event instead of just attending

Attending a conference puts you in the audience. Hosting a session at one puts you at the front of a room full of people who chose your topic. For founders building authority — and for anyone whose business depends on being known — the asymmetry is enormous.

Spark is the easiest entry point. Submit through the "Be Part of Spark" page. They explicitly invite talks, panels, workshops, dinners, socials, pitch nights, roundtables, or "something completely different." If you don't have a venue, say so when you apply — they hold a limited number of spaces, though they're clear that supply is tight.

Sunrise side events come with money attached. A $200–$2,000 grant covers catering and AV for a focused workshop. Apply when the next edition's window opens.

Ignite is the speaking rep. Five minutes is short enough that you can genuinely rehearse it to the word.

If you'd rather start smaller

You don't need a festival's permission. A virtual workshop needs a topic, a date and a Zoom link. An in-person one needs a room — a coworking space will usually lend you one for free if you bring people through the door.

The sequence that works: run one small virtual session on something you actually know, record it, use the recording as evidence when you apply to a festival. Most founders try this in reverse, pitch a festival cold with no track record, and conclude they're not the speaking type.

Frequently asked questions

Is SXSW Sydney coming back? No. The January 2026 cancellation covered the 2026 festival and all future events, after the NSW government withdrew funding.

What's the cheapest startup event in Sydney? Spark Festival — every event is free. The Social Enterprise Festival's community day is also free entry.

How do I get a cheap ticket to Sunrise? Early-stage founders up to Series A can apply for heavily discounted tickets, but applications close months ahead and are allocated by lottery. Watch for the window around January.

Can I host an event without being an established name? Yes. Spark's model is explicitly grassroots and community-submitted, which is unusual and worth using.
